12pm: ANIMATION SPOTLIGHT: Rock & Rule (1983, 1h 17m) – The other fantasy rock n’ roll animated movie for adults made in Canada in the early ’80s. In a post-apocalyptic world in which rodents have long since evolved into humanoid beings, an egomaniacal rock star needs to find a special voice to release a demon from another dimension, in the hope that it will immortalize him. He thinks he finds it in the young female singer in a struggling rock band, who he kidnaps, setting the stage for her rescue and a climactic battle between good & evil. 2pm: The Last Waltz (1978, 1h 57m) – Pre-eminent director Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull, GoodFellas) directed this documentary of the celebrated (& mostly Canadian) music group The Band’s famous last show, with musical guests including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell & Van Morrison to name a few, and it’s acknowledged as one of the best music documentaries ever made.
